A.NORMAN JEFFARES, AM, FRSL, born in Dublin in 1920, and educated at Trinity College, Dublin and Oriel College, Oxford, held teaching posts at the Universities of Dublin, Groningen, Edinburgh, Adelaide, Leeds and Stirling, and was managing director of Academic Advisory Services Ltd., Chairman of Book Trust, Scotland, Vice Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council, a member of the Arts Council of Great Britain, and President of International PEN Scotland. He was Life President of IASIL, the International Association for the Study of Irish Literatures (originally of Anglo-Irish Literature – IASAIL), which he founded with Brendan Kennelly and John Kelly, was an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Dublin, and received honorary doctorates from the Universities of Dublin and Lille. He became a Director of Colin Smythe Limited in 1978. He had just completed reading the proofs of A Nineteenth Century Irish Reader at the time of his death, in his sleep, on 1 June 2005.
