Samuel J.Waddell (1878-1967), who wrote under the pseudonym of Rutherford Mayne, was educated at the Royal Belfast Academical Institute, qualified as an engineer at the Royal University, (as Queen’s University was then known), and worked for the Irish Land Commission until his retirement as its head, in 1950.

He acted and wrote for the Ulster Literary Theatre and his play The Drone was its first major success in 1908. He was probably the best known of the Ulster playwrights of the first half of the 20th century and his plays were for the most part popular.
