The First VersionUnited Kingdom
Illustrated by the author
Colin Smythe, 3000
copies, 16/11/71 (0-900675-49-7)
The illustrations in a very few copies
- certainly less than ten - were hand coloured by the author.
As far as I know, only two had
all the illustrations coloured and extra pen and ink drawings added to some
pages; others only had the full page illustrations coloured. A facsimile reprint of this first edition
specially bound in carpet was presented in a special case to
the author by
Transworld Publishers on his fiftieth
birthday. A copy in a standard trade binding is in the
possession of the
original publisher.
There are no other
copies of this printing.
Our
edition of
The Carpet People
is no longer in print, but Terry Pratchett's illustrations to our
edition of The Carpet People are available at:

were sold without publicity at the same price as those without this
notice and had no separate ISBN.
1st UK paperback
New English Library (cover
illus. Tim White), 5,000 copies, 5/82 (0-450-04977-9)
This edition was remaindered by NEL in 1985, and Colin
Smythe Ltd. bought about 300 copies, ‘publishing’ them on 20/5/85.
These had a label on the title verso: ‘This edition of Strata is now | published by Colin Smythe Ltd., | Gerrards Cross, |
Buckinghamshire | ISBN 0-86140-232-4’.
The new ISBN was allocated to ensure that orders were not sent to
NEL who would have merely booksellers that it was ‘out of print’.
2nd UK paperback
Corgi, 39,600 copies, 22/4/88 (0-552-13325-6)
Originally issued with 192 pages, it was reprinted in 1990. In 1991
it was reset to increase its length to 208 pages
(including advertisements), reprinted in 1992 and 1993. With the
1994 reprint the cover was redesigned,
but still used the original Kirby illustration.

It was reprinted in the USA, but with page size 20.8 x
13.2 cm., head- and tail-bands, spine blocked gold, and the jacket
of which had a solid black back cover, except for a white strip at
the foot in which appeared the ISBN, and the printed price was
increased to $12.95. The title verso has been modified, adding
Library of Congress CIP Data.
The line ‘First published
in the United States of America in 1981’ has been deleted and the
copyright and country of printing lines have been changed.

With Neil Gaiman
By mutual agreement, the ordering of the
authors names differed according to the place of
publication.
Those marked with an asterisk had Neil Gaimans name in prime place.
There are two main versions of the
text: the Gollancz and the American/Corgi. After the Gollancz
edition was set,
revisions were made to the text for the Workman edition to make some
of the references and humour comprehensible
to the American reader and, in Terry Pratchett’s words, ‘here and
there we just sharpened things up a little’.
The latter version was also used, with a few further minor changes,
for the Corgi edition.
The German translation uses the Gollancz version, the other overseas
publishers use the American/Corgi one.
